So you don't know a red wine
glass from a champagne flute, or a steak knife from a butter knife;
that doesn't mean you can't host an elegant dinner for family,
friends or that special someone.
This season's table setting
trends embrace the most fashion 'unconscious' of us by encouraging
individuality, and even a little rule breaking!
While a
little of the unexpected is in order this season there are still
some basic table setting principles that must be kept in mind.
Martha McKee, manager of advertising, visual merchandising
and public relations at Waterford Wedgwood Canada Inc., says that
one of the most common table-setting mistakes is placing the cutlery
and glasses in the wrong order.

"People seem to
get really confused about what goes where. The rule is: set the
cutlery and glasses in the order they will be used, working from the
outside of the place-setting in - the only exception is that the
dinner knife always sits to the right of the dinner plate."
As for the glasses, says McKee, "the wine glass
actually goes on the right of the plate just to the left of the tip
of the knife. The glasses go in order of use from the outside to the
middle--though often if you are using a water goblet it stays in the
inside position because it remains there throughout the courses,
until dessert when it is usually removed."
