Tightfisted jet setters might be relieved to know tipping is unnecessary at bars and restaurants in Japan and Australia. But when in Rome (or any place else in Italy), it's polite to leave 1,000 lire per drink for your bartender and round the bill up at a restaurant -- for example, leaving 120,000 lire on a bill that comes to 115,000 lire.

In Thailand, tourists can pass on tips when they're eating lunch at a restaurant, but ought to throw down at least 10 baht after a good dinner and 7 baht per drink served.

And if you're the type who agonizes over whether to reward a hotel porter's heavy lifting, take a breather. Those tips generally are optional, the magazine said.
