They won't
ask 'Are we there yet?': Tips for long trips
Thousands of families will be taking
to the roads this summer heading for a holiday destination.
These trips can be hard on children, who may feel bored, confined
and restless.
Here are a few suggestions from the Automobile Association
to keep kids' minds off the long drive. Plan breaks along the
way to let kids out of the car to play and burn off energy,
but make sure they're buckled up safely while on the move.
- Answer the question "Are we there yet?" as precisely as
possible. Don't just answer "soon," which is frustrating
for children. You can help kids with this question by turning
it into a game. Suggest kids watch for landmarks. As you
drive by, tell them how far it is to your destination.
- Children love to navigate. Provide them with a map and
circle the starting point and final destination. Let them
tell you which city you will pass next. If children are
too young to read, they can point out buildings or landmarks
along the way.
- Have kids pack a "fun bag" with some favourite toys and
books.
- Bring along special toys that are rarely used, a favourite
blanket or CD player with sing-along tunes.
- Playing road games can keep children busy. For example,
ask kids to look for certain licence plates, buildings,
trees or a certain colour of vehicle. It's similar to a
treasure hunt and parents can offer a reward to the winner.
But stop playing the game while it's still fun; if a game
goes on too long, kids can become cranky.
