About Thailand
The capital of Thailand is
Bangkok and the country is bordered to the northeast by Laos;
to the east by Cambodia; to the south by the Gulf of Thailand
and
Malaysia; and to the west by Myanmar (Burma)
and the Indian Ocean. It has an estimated population of 59,510,00
(1994).
Thailand's economy is heavily agricultural.
Rice is the main crop and rubber, teak, and tin are also valuable
commodities.
Thai is the official language and the country is a constitutional
monarchy.
Theft and Crime
Petty crime, especially pickpocketing, is common in all areas
so travellers should take precaution to ensure documents, money
and valuables are secure. Do not accept food or drink from strangers
as it may be drugged.
Canadians are cautioned to avoid travel to the Thai border areas
near Myanmar (Burma) and Cambodia due to ongoing conflicts in
those regions.
Drugs
Use or possession of all narcotics, including marijuana, is
illegal in Thailand. Authorities will prosecute offenders, regardless
of the amounts of drugs involved.

Health Risks
The World Health Organization and Health Canada report that
dengue fever, Japanese B encephalitis, hepatitis A, malaria
(regional), tuberculosis, and typhoid fever can occur in Thailand.
Risk of contraction is based on several factors including current
health, immunization status, and travel location. Health Canada
strongly recommends an individual risk assessment by a physician
prior to departure.
Weather Conditions
The rainy season (or monsoon) occurs from July to October. Travellers
should be aware that severe rain storms can cause flooding and
reduce the provision of essential services, especially in remote
locations such as islands. Jungle treks may not be advisable
during this time of year, due to the possibility of mudslides.
