This fully illustrated book is as much a treat to look at
as it is to use. With colour photos and illustrated steps
for every recipe, it's difficult to imagine serving something
from Creative Cooking Thai that doesn't look and taste great.
The dishes range from simple starters and blender drinks to
more elaborate full course meals. Most recipes are easy to
follow and have only four or five steps.
The starters section has some great bite-sized treats that
would be perfect for serving to guests over drinks. Imagine
the splash that battered mussels, sesame toasts and chicken
roasted in banana leaves would make at your next dinner party.
There are quite a few recipes here that are suitable for a
vegetarian but the same can't be said for those in search
of low-fat fare. While there are many dishes with fish or
vegetables as the main ingredients, sauces, batters and breading
are also a key feature.
That aside, if it's flavour you're after this cookbook won't
let you down. Ginger, cilantro, curry, mango and chili are
just a few of the staples used. Some of the ingredients called
for are a bit exotic and may require you to hunt through some
specialty shops, but most recipes can be made with regular
grocery store produce.
The book includes a brief introduction about Thai culture
and cuisine and the features "cook's tips" throughout with
information on recipe changes, garnishes, and substitutions.
Overall, Creative Cooking Thai is a worthwhile investment
for those looking to spice it up a bit - as long as you don't
mind a few extra calories on your plate.
